The Cross Is Not Comfortable

With Kenneth King

Taking Up Your Cross Daily

Luke 9:23

“Then he said to them all: Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”

Sometimes faith isn’t displayed in grand gestures. It’s found in simple acts of obedience that require us to step beyond our comfort. God doesn’t ask us to be impressive—He asks us to be available.

Luke 9:1-6

And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, 2 and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal. 3 And he said to them, “Take nothing for your journey, no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not have two tunics. 4 And whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart. 5 And wherever they do not receive you, when you leave that town shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.” 6 And they departed and went through the villages, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.Luke 9:22

“The son of man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.”

The Cross Means Denying Self

Luke 9:23

23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

“Not my will, but yours be done.” (Luke 22:42)

The Cross Means Daily Commitment

Following Christ isn’t usually one dramatic act of sacrifice. It’s a daily choice to put on the “boots” of faith, deny ourselves, obey Him, and serve others—even when it’s uncomfortable. Just as a soldier becomes battle-ready through daily commitment, a disciple grows stronger by taking up the cross every single day. Even when it’s uncomfortable, even when we’re tired, even when we’ve had a hard day, even when we had a rough night, even when normal days feel like war.

Likewise, disciples don’t follow Jesus only when circumstances are favorable.

The Cross Means Serving the Church

The church grows strongest when people stop asking:

“What can the church do for me?”

and start asking: “How can I help the church fulfill God’s mission?”

Jesus doesn’t simply call us to believe that He existed, or even to believe that He can save us. He calls on us to commit our whole lives to Him—to trust Him alone for our salvation, and then to follow Him as His disciples.

He said, “Anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:27).

Following Jesus Means Going Where He Leads

The question is not “Is this comfortable?” The question is “Is Jesus leading me there?”

Christ is not calling us to be comfortable, but instead we are called to be obedient.
